Forensic medicine is one of the largest and most important areas of forensic science (Health & Medicine Degrees). Also called legal medicine or medical jurisprudence, it applies medical knowledge to criminal and civil law. Areas of medicine that are commonly involved in forensic medicine are anatomy, pathology, and psychiatry. Coursework in forensic medicine can include forensic imaging, pathology, crime scene investigation, major case investigation, evidence, bioethics, and criminal investigation analysis. Specialized training is available in traffic injury, forensic science, sexual assault, pediatric forensic medicine, genetics, and forensic psychiatry. Forensic medicine graduates go on to careers such as Crime Lab Analyst, FBI Special Agent, Crime Scene Examiner, Police Detective, Medical Examiner, Private Investigator, Forensic Science Technician, and Researcher.

A degree in forensic medicine requires that students complete courses in forensic science, DNA analysis, crime scene investigation, and crime laboratory equipment. These courses will prepare students for analyzing samples taken from accidents and crime scenes, conducting autopsies, and processing information into computer systems. Forensic scientists can find work in local and national crime labs, private laboratories, and labs conducting research in college and university settings. There is a lot that forensic medicine has enabled law enforcement to do that has helped them solve crimes that might have otherwise gone unsolved. Tracing materials, blood samples, skin samples, soil samples, and water analysis are all techniques that have helped solve crimes or at least have given law enforcement additional information that they can use to narrow their scope.
