What Is The difference between RN and BSN?

Beginning a career in nursing for those who desire an abbreviated education will get an associate’s degree (AD) which usually involves 2-3 years of schooling. A nurse may also follow a diploma program, usually through a hospital, that is also 2-3 years in length before becoming an RN. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Sample Survey, 70% of nurses have AD or diploma level degrees.

A Bachelors degree in nursing is a 4yr degree offered in colleges and universities. The first 2 years consists of general education and science classes to prepare you for the nursing courses in the last 2 years. A BSN offers additional focus in leadership, management and community nursing. It also qualifies you to take the NCLEX-RN exam to obtain a Registered Nurse license in your state.

Considerations

So why do 4 years instead of 2? It depends on what you want to do. If you really like the academic setting and broad educational experience and/or would like to go into management, then go straight for the BSN.

If you really want to focus on bedside nursing, or $$$ is a significant concern, consider the ASN or diploma (available in some states). After you get your ASN and pass the NCLEX, you can work as an RN (pay is no different than for a new grad BSN). Many hospitals have tuition re-imbursement for nurses working on a BSN---you can work and go for an online nursing degree for the BSN and your employer will pay for part of it.

Ultimately, a BSN is a good goal for any RN, but you don't have to start there. There is also a Masters and PhD available if you want to teach nursing or do research.
